Back to the Blogging

How strange it is to be back to blogging— well, at least hoping to be back to blogging! I hadn’t realized that this blog has been untouched since 2020, but I was sitting in my Nature and Travel Writing class this past semester and posed with the question “Where will you build and showcase your portfolio?” One of my answers was, of course, this blog... in spite of only having two posts, not thinking about the website in about a year and a half, and new people in my life not even knowing that I once created a blog way back in the summer of 2020. I daresay many of us proclaimed new hobbies during the original lockdown and have since abandoned our timely so-called passions.

The class that I mentioned, Nature and Travel Writing, was one of the odder classes I’ve taken during my university experience (and that’s saying something since I’m an English major). First of all, the subjects of “nature” and “travel” don’t seem to be related subjects, especially in light of writing. It was a curious class that ended with each of us students having to write a piece about a recent encounter with nature and/or travel. Also, we had to plan how we would advertise our piece and ourselves. It was comical to witness my peers dig blogs like these out of graves, log into forgotten Instagram profiles once dedicated to photography or writing, or even admit that they didn’t have any form of social media at all. I included this blog as one of my media presences simply to have the minimum amount required— but then I began to consider actually reviving this blog.

One of the points that my professor continually drilled into us was that you need to choose an area of interest to essentially market yourself towards editors. It seemed my classmates did this with ease, exclusively focusing on topics such as backpacking, cooking, book recommendations, or travel tips for college students. I, however, was not surprised that I could not pick just one area. It’s the same when I consider what career path I want to choose; so many (perhaps too many) areas interest me and it seems a shame to just pick, and potentially limit myself, to one. Someone once referred to me as a “Renaissance Woman,” and while I was flattered at first, being interested in writing, law, dance, art, acting, singing, and even baking and brewing coffee means that I can’t just pick one area. I flit from this to that, all while being told that I have talents in each area (okay, maybe my acting and singing careers were left in 2017 and I never quite got the knack of the espresso machine when I worked at Dunkin’ Donuts, but still!).

Flitting from this to that can’t be too shocking since my boyfriend, Devan, does call me “Hummingbird.” While the inspiration for this nickname comes from the song performed by John Mayer and B.B. King, I feel it no less applies to my interest in too many things. I’ve decided to embrace this quality as I get back to the basics, back to blogging. I can’t promise what exactly I’ll write about, but I’m thrilled to be exploring all of my interests as I start blogging again and I hope you come with me on this journey!
